Get to know new Bobcat Leslie Aquino:
Where I come from: I’m from Bakersfield and I graduated from East Bakersfield High School.
What I've done: I was class valedictorian and earned a gold seal on my diploma that recognizes California high school graduates who showed high proficiency in English and at least one other language. I ran track and cross country throughout high school and earned first team all-conference honors multiple times. After going undefeated in league competition, I was named the South Yosemite Mountain League’s Most Valuable Player and competed at the state championships in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters. I’m an active member of my church and love to participate in their community food drives.
Why are you excited about coming to UC Merced? I’m ready to join some clubs and meet new people. I want to grow as a person and I hope to make friends who will help me. I’m excited to hit the track and run at the highest level.
Academic and personal goals: I’m majoring in computer science and possibly double majoring in Spanish. I want to help others but not necessarily face-to-face. I believe a career in software development will allow me to achieve that balance. I want to stay focused and improve in the classroom and on the track.
Favorite food: Pizza. I used to hate it but now I love it!
What do you do to relax? Draw. Whenever I’m stressed, angry or sad, I reach for my sketchbook.
You can teleport anywhere in the world for a three-day weekend. Where do you go? Spain. I think it is very pretty and it would be a cool experience as a Spanish major.
Quotable: "I want my actions to demonstrate my commitment to helping others.”
