Dean's introduction

How I AI: Innovation meets Education

I am pleased to introduce our new bi-weekly series “How I AI: Innovation meets Education.” While this series will showcase how our faculty are integrating AI tools into their academic work, I want to specifically address why this initiative is crucial for our graduate student and postdoctoral scholar community.

Graduate education stands at a pivotal moment. The emergence of AI tools presents both opportunities and challenges for scholars. As researchers and future faculty members, graduate students and postdocs need not only to be aware of these technologies, but also to learn how to harness them productively and ethically within their scholarly activities.

It isn't just about using AI to work faster. It's about working smarter and continuing UC Merced’s commitment to excellence and integrity.

In this series, you will get a sense of how UC Merced faculty use AI tools in their research, their teaching, and sometimes even in everyday tasks. I urge you to look at these, not just as demonstrations of what can be done, but as starting points for developing your approaches to integrating AI into your academic practice. Graduate Division is committed to supporting your development in this area. In addition to this series, we will be offering workshops and training sessions specifically designed for graduate students on AI tools and best practices.

The future of scholarship will belong to those who can thoughtfully combine human insight with emerging technological capabilities. I am excited to see how you will take advantage of these tools to elevate your research, teaching, and professional development.

Sincerely,

Hrant Hratchian, PhD

Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate Division
